Stawell led from start to finish but the side did not have things all its way as it took a 16.12 (108) to 10.10 (70) win.
Stawell coach Tom Eckel said it was a good win that came on the back of good ball use.
“The boys backed themselves with ball in hand and moved it through the corridor well,” he said.
The Warriors had a one-point lead at quarter-time and extended it to 20 points by half-time. Nhill did not let the side get away and cut the lead by a goal during the third quarter. But the Tigers could not keep pace in the final quarter.
Tigers coach Alan Bennett said he was disappointed with the result.
“We did not let them get away until the last quarter but we were chasing all day,” he said. “The side did not play with as much intensity as it did in round one.
“We moved the ball too slowly but that was a credit to Stawell’s pressure. They look like a seriously good side this season.”
Stawell’s Travis Graham added six goals to his four in round one and Eckel said Jackson Dark played an awesome game at centre-half-back.
Despite the win Eckel said there was still things his side needed to work on.
“At times Nhill caught us off guard with their run and carry after our turnovers,” he said. “Those turnovers came about because we were not protecting our own ball carries enough so they were delivering under pressure.”
