A Josh Bibby goal in the dying minutes of the game gave handed the side a 7.9 (51) to 6.11 (47) win.
Prior to the season coach Ryan McKenzie identified beating a side that finished higher than it last year as a goal for this season.
“It was anyone’s game the whole way,” he said. “There was a few lead changes throughout.”
In the low-scoring contest the away side managed to finish each-quarter in front.
At quarter time it was five-points, at half-time three points separated the side and at the final break there was a single point in it.
Saints coach Luke Fisher rued missed shots at goal.
“I thought we controlled it for a lot even though Warrack had as many inside 50s,” he said. “We just didn’t take our chances, particularly in the second quarter. We missed four or five shots on goal that were pretty easy ones.”
Fisher said his side did everything it had set out to do before the game except win the game.
It took a team effort from the Eagles to come away with the win, something that pleased McKenzie.
“We didn’t have any passengers,” he said.
“Those ugly wins that you need to grind out can be better for a team than an easy win.”
Along with the match winner Bibby kicked two other goals and Kieran Ellis was best on ground for the Eagles. For the Saints the leadership of defenders Xander McRae and Andy Devereaux stood out.
