Horsham and District Relay For Life committee has developed Recipes for Life, a book that includes recipes submitted by carers and survivors alongside photos from relays over the years.
They will launch the book at an event in Horsham on Saturday next week, where groups, teams, businesses and individuals who have made significant contributions to the fight against cancer will be inducted into a hall of fame.
Money raised from the cookbook will go towards the Horsham and District event and Rachael’s Wish, the fundraising campaign for the Wimmera Cancer Centre.
Horsham and District relay committee member Justin Amor said the book gave an insight into the community and the atmosphere at the relays.
“It will be a fantastic take-home thing for people. Hopefully it will be something that can be passed on through families,” he said.
“It contains some dedications from people to their family members – they are really touching.
“We are still discussing how it will go on sale, but people can put in orders at the hall of fame event.”
Mr Amor said the event was about celebrating and acknowledging the people, teams and businesses that had been part of the relay’s success since it started in 2001.
“We wanted to honour those who have been involved in relay for a long time and who are getting a little bit older,” Mr Amor said.
“We don't want time to pass without recognising the time, effort and energy people put in during those early days to create such an incredible event.
“The community has been unbelievable in its support for Relay For Life.
“The organisations and businesses give to so much, because there’s so many causes these days. We wanted to recognise them too.”
Mr Amor said the night would start with committee members explaining how the hall of fame recipients were assessed.
“We will have a speaker from Cancer Council Victoria, who will talk about where some of the money goes that come from the Wimmera,” he said.
“Then we’ll hand out a research award. Teams that have raised more than $5000 get to nominate a particular cancer cause.
“In the past those teams might have just received a letter in the mail or an email, but we wanted to formally recognise them.
“Kessia Brooke – who played at this year's Relay For Life – will provide entertainment, and then we'll start inducting the businesses and organisations, teams and individuals into the hall of fame.
“It will be a feel-good event and hopefully people will come away inspired to get involved, if they aren't already.”
Mr Amor said tickets for the event at the Coughlin Park community centre were $15, and available at Horsham’s Freijah Menswear.
