Horsham Anytime Fitness manager Leah Dumesny said the treadmills would move for 24-hours in a bid to create suicide awareness.
“It has become a timely message in our community,” she said.
“I recently had a friend who committed suicide who was a team mate and it is never a great thing, but it’s great we can do our bit and raise awareness.”
Miss Dumesny said she encouraged people to lock in their times and donate online.
“From 6am Friday to 6am Saturday we’re keeping the treadmills going,” she said.
“Whether you want to run or walk that is up to you.”
Miss Dumesny said people had the option to take the challenge for a half an hour up to an hour.
She said it was $15 for the half an hour or $30 for the full hour.
“We are encouraging both members and non-members to get involved, but if you can’t make the time then we are more than happy to take donations as well,” she said.
Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15 to 44.
“We have a lot of young members at the gym, so if anyone is suffering with depression and they need someone to talk to we want them to know that it is okay to talk about your problems,” Miss Dumesny said.
“If we can make the difference that deters people from committing suicide, then we are doing our bit.”
Miss Dumesny said donations could be made at www.anytimefitness.com.au/treadmillrun. She said all donations went to Suicide Prevention Australia.
