In the A grade match of the night, top-of-the-ladder Phantom Hercules squared off against second-placed Hades Nuggets, and the Phantom team had to dig deep to pull off a five-set win.
The Nuggets quickly established a two-sets-to-love lead on the back of some strong blocking by Jon Fitzgerald and Aidan O’Connor.
The Phantoms were looking for ways to penetrate the Nuggets’ defensive wall, and after a line-up change by captain Tim Popple, moving key attacker Tyler Snowden to the opposite position, they found a way and powered on, winning the last three sets.
The second game was another thrilling five-setter with Poseidon Murtoa recording their second win for the season at the expense of Hypnos Roar. Murtoa’s Josh Boak and Jordy Weidemann were in everything, while the Roar had Paddy Sherry strong in offence.
In B grade Von Steiger Shadows made short work of the young Saints team, winning four sets.
The contest was fairly even in the first set, but strong serving from Emma Avery and power hitting by Mark Block saw the Von Steigers claim the set.
From then on it was all one-way traffic as Mitch Crough stepped up hitting some big winners, despite the defensive efforts of Wily Ioleu and Harry Combe.
In other matches the battle of the Phantom teams saw the Masters hang on to defeat the fast-finishing Rangers on points, while the experience of Andrew Wundke and Chris Baker got the Waterhammers over the line against a plucky Murtoa team, in a highly entertaining contest.
Competition takes a break for the school holidays. Juniors and C grade resume on October 9 while A and B grades will go into round two of their Lightning Spike Challenge on October 11.
