A B-double truck carrying 45,000 litres of diesel fuel rolled over at Deep Lead, causing emergency services to shut the Western Highway in both directions.
District 16 CFA operations officer Neville Collins said a considerable amount of diesel spilled onto the road as a result of the incident.
“The diesel has travelled about 500 to 700 metres down the Western Highway and crews are working hard to contain to leak,” he said.
“HAZMAT vehicles from Corio and Ballarat City will be attending the scene this morning.
“Crews have done a fantastic job this morning and are expected to be on scene for an extended period of time today for monitoring.”
The driver of the truck was uninjured, but was transported to hospital by Ambulance Victoria for observation.
Police are in attendance and the Environmental Protection Authority is making their way to the scene.
Up to 11 CFA vehicles from Stawell, Halls Gap, Glenorchy, Dadswells Bridge, Ararat, Corio and Ballarat City are in attendance.

The Western Highway remains closed between Stawell and Horsham after a B-double rolled over about 8am on Tuesday morning.
VicRoads and emergency services are on site working to clear the scene as quickly as possible.
Specialty hazmat trucks have also been spotted attending the scene.

THE Western Highway could be closed for most of the day in both directions after a B-double crashed near at Deep Lead.
Emergency services were called to the scene, near the Deep Lead Road exit, about 8am on Tuesday morning.
A police officer directing traffic through a detour warned motorists driving to Horsham from Stawell that the delay would add 10 minutes to their journey.
Drivers should take care when travelling through the area.
VicRoads and emergency services are on site working to clear the scene as quickly as possible.
VicRoads advises motorists to detour via Horsham and Stawell via Donald-Stawell Rd, Wimmera Highway and the Henty Highway.
Drivers east and have already passed Horsham, will be detoured onto Stawell-Warracknabeal Road via Rupanyup and Marnoo.
