Yarriambiack Shire Council was successful in its bid for a grant that allowed the council to work with the school and art company Juddy Roller to design and paint the mural.
The council’s community services and development manager Gavin Blinman said the council and Juddy Roller were now searching for an artist to assist with the project.
Mr Blinman said the artist would work directly with the young people on designing and creating the mural.
“They will come up with a theme for the mural and it will start being painted in November,” Mr Blinman said.
The mural will be painted on the wall of the leisure complex facing the Warracknabeal skate park.
The council’s chief executive Ray Campling said the project would be a colourful addition to the skate park area.
“It is expected to be around 24 metres long and two metres high – so quite a substantial piece of art,” Mr Campling said.
The project was accompanied by an education program.
Mr Campling said guest speakers would address young people, educating them about some of the problems with graffiti as part of the mural project.
He said the council would lead a tour for young people on some of the areas in Warracknabeal that had been damaged by graffiti in the past.
He said on the completion of the project, an anti-graffiti clean-up crew would be established to ensure the sustainability of the project.
