No fires can be lit in the open air in the Wimmera, Mallee and North Central from 12.01am December 19 to 11.59pm December 19.
The Country Fire Authority has advised people living in areas at risk of fire to activate their bush fire plan.
The Total Fire Ban includes Horsham Rural City Council, Hindmarsh Shire, Northern Grampians Shire, West Wimmera Shire and Yarriambiack Shire.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a maximum of 36 degrees, partly cloudy.
There is 60 per cent chance of showers in the morning and the afternoon with a chance of thunderstorm in the morning and early afternoon.
Northeasterly winds 25 to 35 kilometres an hour turning north to northeasterly 25 to 30 kilometres an hour during the morning.
The winds will tend westerly 25 to 40 kilometres an hour in the middle of the day.
The Bureau of Meteorology forecast Ararat could be affected by damaging winds on Tuesday with winds averaging 50 to 60 kilometres an hour with peak gusts of 90 to 100 kilometres an hour.
The winds should ease in the afternoon.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
- Keep clear of fallen power lines.
