Fans of Joan Lindsay's book, Picnic at Hanging Rock, and Peter Weir's subsequent film dressed as main character Miranda on Saturday and visited the iconic site for a flashmob dance.
The crowd of about 550 performed a dance inspired by the tale of schoolgirls who inexplicably vanish while on a Valentine's Day picnic.
"People really got into the spirit of things, enjoying themselves and letting their inner Mirandas out," Macedon Ranges Shire Council CEO Margot Stork told AAP.
Many fans hoped the celebration could become an annual event, something council would consider, she said.
Supposedly based on a true story, the tale has captured audiences the world over.
Such is its enduring appeal that Foxtel is releasing a six-part remake in May.
