The side lost last season’s senior coach Michael Rowe, while pre-season was overshadowed by talks of a merger with Border Districts.
New coach Chris Oliver said the off-season issues had helped galvanise the group.
“Everyone has really gotten behind the club and a few past players have come back to bolster up the line up such as the likes of Bart Nolan, Taylor Milner and Jay Barby just to name a few,” he said.
Despite losing a host of players, Oliver is hopeful the side can play finals this season.
“Our goal this year is to be more attacking especially in front of goals,” he said.
“Our defence has always been strong and I’m expecting nothing less this year from them but going forward we need to be cleaner and more direct.
“After a disappointing end to the season last year I think finals this year are a must.”
With some experienced heads gone, this season will also provide a chance for the Saints’ youngsters to step up.
“There’s a lot of young talent that will be on show this year,” Oliver said.
“The likes of Lachie Middleton, Sam McClure and Dale Smith have put in a very good pre-season. These guys have had a fair taste of senior footy now and are more then capable to become very dominant.”
The Saints start their season against Rupanyup at Edenhope on April 7.
Q and A with Chris Oliver
What is your goal for season 2018?
The goal this year is to give all of our players a shot at earning their position and making the team diversify themselves around the ground.
Who are the leaders in the group?
Matthew Butler has stepped up and is taking a leadership role as assistant coach and two Kealy boys Jerry and Bernie and Cameron Domaschenz will also be assisting with leadership roles.
What has you excited for this season?
A lot of young talent will be on show this year. Also seeing new signing Damian Monaghan running through the midfield and I’m expecting him to be very hard to stop with his speed and silky skills.
