Horsham Rural City Council received $192,035 in funding from the state government to improve the lighting and footpaths on the track surrounding the racecourse. The works are scheduled to start early next month.
Technical services director John Martin said there were concerns expressed to council about the darkness around the area.
“People like to go for runs before work or at night. While there’s lighting on Ballie Street the trees dim the brightness,” he said. “The lighting will give people reassurance use the track when it’s dark.”
Mr Martin said there were also concerns about the quality of the footpaths.
“The safety of the area and the potential for tripping was also a concern,” he said.
Mr Martin said he hoped the improvements will encourage people to use the racecourse route more often in the future.
