Horsham started well and kept Ellinbank goalless in the opening term and kicking two of its own.
Ruckman Hamish McRae took plenty of solid marks while Seb Relouw, Matt McCulloch and Ryan McAlpine set the tone for Horsham. The side took a 28-23 lead into the half-time break.
Horsham held onto its lead in the third term before an onslaught in the last term from Ellinbank turned the tables.
Ellinbank started the final quarter with two quick goals to hit the lead. The side moved the ball well to overrun Horsham and finish with a 11.9 (75) to 9.6 (60) win.
Co-coach Jye Smith said it was disappointing to lead for so long and not come away with the win.
“It’s always tough with a new side but they performed really well for the first three quarters,” he said.
“We might have run out of legs in the end but Ellinbank just really wanted it in the last quarter. They had a bit of luck on their side too.
“We had quite a few players who played well – there was a good spread.”
Hamish McRae was named best on ground for Horsham District, while Ryan McAlpine recevied the coach’s best on ground award.
“I think everyone who played today will take a great experience back to their home clubs,” Smith said.
“Interleague is about playing great football but also making some really good friendships.”
