Over 100 church members and guests attended a fake wedding reception on Friday, May 18 at the church’s function hall to honour the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, which was held the following day.
Event co-ordinator and Uniting Church parishioner Denise Merrett said it wasn’t the first time the church had celebrated a royal occasion.
“When William and Kate were married in 2011, someone at the church suggested that we hold a tea to celebrate,” she said.
“It was just a small event, but six months ago when Meghan and Harry were engaged, we decided we wanted to hold something bigger.”
Preparations for the night took months, with organsiers creating decorations fit for a Duke and Duchess.
“It was important for us to be authentic,” she said.
“We found out that the cake would be a traditional fruit cake with elderflower and lemon flavouring, and decorated with roses, so we had a similar cake professionally made.”
People were encouraged to wear full wedding attire on the night, with selected guests chosen to dress up as members of the royal family.
Guests were also asked to bring presents that will be later donated to charity.
More than 60 gifts were collected on the night.
“It was just a bit of fun and a good social night,” she said.
“Everyone enjoyed themselves and we’d love to do it again, but there won’t be another royal wedding on the horizon anytime soon.”
