Needs started the game level with Wedderburn’s Alan Jackson on 811 seniors goals but played through the midfield for much of the match before drifting forward during the final term.
The goal came when he took the ball straight out of a boundary throw in and threw it on the boot.
“I wasn’t sure whether I’d kicked it or not,” he said. “Some of the Birchip-Watchem boys were claiming it was touched but it was given the all clear.”
Needs was on the ground as a number of his teammates ran to him to celebrate.
“We were quite a long way down at that point so the celebrations were a little subdued,” he said.
“It was all everyone has been talking about for the last couple of weeks so I’m just happy to get it over with.
“Just throwing it on the boot and not thinking about it was the best way it could have happened.”
He added a second fourth quarter goal to stretch the league benchmark out to 813 and was presented with the match ball by a league official after the game.
