With his St Kilda captain Jarryn Geary injured, Ross was next in line to lead out the Saints.
Ross joined the Saints’ leadership group for the first time last season and had previously captained the side in a pre-season tournament.
He thrived in the leadership group last season and was named in the All-Australian 40-person squad after a solid season.
St Kilda coach Alan Richardson said Ross had become a highly respected leader at the club.
“This opportunity allowed us to have the discussion as to who should lead the team and why – the why for Seb is pretty simple,” he said.
“His ability to both challenge and support his teammates is really high and they have great respect for the way he goes about his football. He hasn’t captained the team in a home-and-away season match before, so it’s a great chance for him to develop his leadership.”
It was a tough outing as captain for Ross, with the Saints suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of Sydney at Etihad Stadium. The Swans kicked nine goals to one in the first quarter and won 19.12 (126) to 7.13 (55). Ross was named in the Saints’ best with 25 disposals.
