ABC’s popular Back Roads program is airing an entire episode on the town on Monday, while cast and crew of Channel 10’s The Living Room were spotted in town last week.
Hosted by guest presenter Paul West of River Cottage fame, the Back Roads episode will explore the region’s diverse appeal and rich history.
Crew members spent nine days in the region last year filming the episode during the Nati Frinj Biennale.
Back Roads producer Louise Turley said the town was chosen to feature on the show after a keen rock-climbing ABC producer suggested it.
“We did a lot of research on the town and thought it would be the perfect place to film an episode,” she said.
“While Heather Ewart was off visiting another part of the country, guest presenter Paul West travelled to Natimuk. Paul grew up in the small NSW town of Murrurundi.
“He loved to scramble over a few rocks as a boy, but he wasn’t prepared for the challenge he faces at Mt Arapiles.”
During the episode, Mr West explores the harmonious unity between the town’s rock climbers and German-Lutheran farmers.
He also interviews Natimuk farmer Brian Uebergang, and rock climbers Louise Shepherd and Keith Lockwood.
“We were really interested in looking at what makes the community so unique,” she said.
“People come from all over the world to go rock-climbing, then there’s the German-Lutheran farmers and the radical hippies who set up camp at the base of the mountain; it’s a really wonderful blend.”
Ms Turley said she hoped the episode would showcase the town to the rest of the country.
“Natimuk is a very special place and Mt Arapiles is an incredible draw card,” she said.
“I think people will be blown away with the footage we got of this beautiful area.”
A spokeswoman for Channel 10 said The Living Room’s segment on Mt Arapiles “was not yet scheduled or finalised” and an air date was not set in stone.
The Back Roads episode on Natimuk will air on the ABC on Monday, June 25 at 8pm.
