The state government’s decision came after its community consultation on plastic pollution. From 8000 submissions, 96 per cent supported a ban.
Supermarkets have already made movements to get rid of plastic bags – Woolworthes are already without them while Coles will remove them on Sunday.
Grampians Central West Waste and Resource Recovery Group executive officer La Vergne Lehmann previously expressed her support of the plastic bags ban to the Wimmera Mail-Times.
She said the ban was a “great start,” but there was a lot more work to be done around dealing with the issue of soft plastics.
Ms Lehmann said shoppers should start putting reusable bags in the back of their cars to remember to bring them to the shop.
