The Swifts managed to collect the victory courtesy of an impressive second half performance, the Baggies won 13.9 (87) to 9.9 (63).
Storm started the game strongly and managed a 17-point lead at quarter-time.
The Baggies put up a strong fight from then, and Storm couldn’t keep up.
By the halfway point in the fixture the Baggies had cut the 17-point deficit down to five points.
Storm coach Tim Inkster said the Baggies didn’t let up and ran until the final siren sounded.
Inkster said he was impressed by the Baggies, but disappointed in his men.
“It wasn’t ideal from our point of view. We were good in very small patches,” he said.
I just wanted the boys to turn up and commit for one another.
- Scott Carey
“We kicked three or four in a hurry and then it was just a fight. They outworked us all day. We saw they couldn’t maintain it in the first quarter but they were still going in the last quarter and that’s why they overran us.”
Inkster said the Baggies missed goals in the opening quarter, he said he thought if they scored those goals the game could have had a very different look.
“Our effort wasn’t good enough for long enough, that takes care of a lot of things,” he said.
“We just couldn’t keep up with them. They outnumbered us in a lot of the contests. We were lucky to be in it for as long as we were to be honest.”
Inkster said the injury list has somewhat lessened after the loss to the Baggies.
“We lost three blokes possibly but may get four more back next week,” he said.
Ash Clugston, Mat Cozens and Hayden Jamieson could all miss the next contest.
Baggies coach Scott Carey said morale had been good at training.
“I just wanted the boys to turn up and commit for one another and if they put their best foot forward we were confident we could take it up to them,” he said.
“And that’s how it went. Pretty much from the first bounce we were able to play the game on our terms, bring the tempo and pressure right up.
“Even though we didn’t hit the scoreboard in the first quarter goal wise, we definitely had opportunities. At quarter time the message was to continue how we went about it and concentrate on converting in front of goal.”
Carey said he thought his team was in control in the final quarter.
“We kicked a couple goals early in the quarter and put a nice buffer there,” he said.
“By all means, they didn’t stop attacking the goals, they had a few shots that they weren’t able to convert.”
Carey said Josh Davis “played out of his skin.”
“He is just so hard at the ball, putting his body on the line. He was excellent today,” he said. “Jacob Davis was really good down back after quarter time. We moved him onto Ash Clugston, Ash was looking dangerous in the first quarter and Jacob was able to minimise his impact.”
