A 17-YEAR-OLD Warracknabeal adolescent is now partially blind in one eye after he was assaulted at a private gathering at Edenhope on Saturday.
The teenager sustained serious head injuries when he was assaulted at about 10pm outside the Edenhope Mechanics Hall.
He was taken to Wimmera Base Hospital in Horsham with serious head injuries.
Speaking to the Wimmera Mail-Times on Tuesday, the 17-year-old victim said he was feeling “really down” about the situation.
“I don’t want anyone else to be put in the same position that I was that night,” he said.
“This is how people die; I’m feeling pretty low at the moment.
“People need to think about the consequences before they do something like this to another person.”
The Warracknabeal apprentice said he was first taken to Wimmera Base Hospital with a concussion.
“I was pretty out of it and don’t really remember much,” he said.
“They made me do an eye test and I couldn’t see anything, so the doctors called the (Royal Victorian) Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne.
“So on Sunday we had to drive to Melbourne to see an eye specialist.
“They said I will be partially blind in my left eye and will see a black spot about the size of 20 cent coin.”
The official prognosis was that the teenager had a tear in his left pupil. It is unlikely that the damage will be healed.
He said the swelling around his eye had gone down, but he was still bruised. The teenager is now resting at home.
He will have to see another eye specialist in Bendigo on Monday and will have regular check-ups into the future.
Goroke Leading Senior Constable Jim Richardson said the incident was a concern for police.
“Police are continuing inquiries into the incident and encourage people with information to contact us,” he said.
