Rosebery was formed in 1894 and played its last game in 1969. While the club did not formally merge with another, Mr Mitchell said roughly half of the players joined Hopetoun and the other half joined Beulah.
“When Rosebery started playing they had no changerooms and would used to get changed at the Rosebery Hotel and then run down the hill to the ground,” he said.
“In two or three cases brothers went to opposite teams. At least the guys kept playing.
“Because it’s been 50 years since the last game we want to get a lot of the families and descendants of past players to attend a reunion. We are not after thousands of people, we just want people to know.”
Mr Mitchell said he hoped the reunion would take place during a home Southern Mallee Giants home game and the Giants would wear a special jumper, with the front featuring Rosebery’s Bombers colours and the back the current Giants jumper.
“Football in the country is having a difficult time and I think teams should embrace their past,” he said.
Southern Mallee Giants president Brad Moore said he supported the idea.
“We will support it and give them the vehicle to drive it. David is going to do most of the work and we will look at a potential jumper design,” he said. “There aren’t that many that live at Rosebery anymore but the ones that are there do support the club and help us out, so it’s definitely worth doing something for them.”
