Officers took the unit’s newest patrol vehicle – a BMW 5 Series sedan – out for a spin for the first time on Thursday morning.
The unit is only the second in the state – and first in regional Victoria – to receive the latest patrol car.
Horsham Highway Patrol Senior Constable Stewart Howarth said it was fantastic that Horsham officers were among the first to try the new vehicle.
“The first car went to a city unit, so we’re the first ones in regional Victoria to try it out,” he said.
“It will be interesting to see how it goes on country roads opposed to city ones.
“There is a lot of new technology, including infrared detection of animals and humans. It will also be very economical opposed to the V8s.”
The new vehicles will soon be rolled out to units across the state. They replace the Australian-built Holden Commodore SS, which went out of production last year, and the Ford Falcon XR8, which ceased production in late 2016.
