Hopetoun Sergeant Phill McClure said a Volkswagen sedan was stolen from outside the Community Hotel about 1.30am Sunday.
“The car was found completely burnt out on Nyallo Road outside of Hopetoun,” he said.
Sergeant McClure said a garden hose was stolen from the Fuel and Nursery Station on Austin Street, power tools and jerrycan from a ute tray in Mandeville Street and a tool box containing power tools from the back of a ute in Lascelles Street across the weekend.
Sergeant McClure said power tools were also stolen from a garage on Dodgshun Street but the owner later found the items against the back fence of the property.
“The toolbox was chained to the ute tray. They took the chains with them,” he said.
“This is just a reminder to anyone not to leave anything in their ute. It’s also a reminder not to leave keys in cars.
“We believe it is people outside of the town. These things happen every now and again, people just need to be aware it can happen.”
Sergeant McClure said police believed the crimes were linked.
Sergeant McClure said anyone with information to contact Hopetoun Police on 5083 3031, the Ararat Criminal Investigation Unit on 5355 1500 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au.
