Hickmott, an assistant coach with the Eagles, has been with the club since 2012 and has now helped guide the club to a premiership.
The Eagles trailed for most of the grand final in front of 100,022 people at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the largest crowd for a grand final since 1986.
West Coast’s Dom Sheed put the Eagles in front by four points from a tight angle after a set shot with two minutes to play.
West Coast won the game 11.13 (79) to 11.8 (74).
Hickmott never won a premiership as a player during his 184-game career with Geelong and Carlton, despite playing in three grand finals in the 1990s.
Earlier this year, he told the Mail-Times that it had hurt not to win a flag as a player.
“I think every AFL player’s dream is to win a grand final, so it stings not to win one but on the other side it’s fantastic to make one,” he said.
“I coach now to develop young players to the best of their ability and mine so they can hopefully achieve that goal of winning a premiership.”
The former Horsham footballer can now lay claim to having been a part of a grand final win.
