The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a weather warning for the west of the state, with severe thunderstorms likely.
A band of strong northerly winds is expected across parts of the Mallee, Wimmera and South Western Districts, with heavy rainfall and large hail possible.
Locations which might be affected include Portland, Horsham, Hamilton, Casterton, Nhill, Ouyen and Mildura.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
- Keep clear of fallen power lines.
- Stay indoors if possible.
- Avoid using the phone during the storm.
- If you are outside, avoid sheltering under trees
- Listen to the radio for storm updates
- Switch off your computer and electrical appliances
Drivers are reminded to ensure they leave extra space between themselves and the vehicle in front, as braking distances increase in wet conditions.
Be sure to turn headlights on, and keep an eye out for cyclists and motorbikes, which are harder to see.
If the rain becomes too heavy for wipers to cope, pull over safely and wait for the rain to pass.
Should you encounter fallen power lines, stay well clear and immediately call Triple Zero.
