Joseph’s Coat from the council’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoa received recognition. Natasha Kuchel was nominated for her role as costume co-ordinator, however the coat was made by Kate Flannery 20 years ago.
Belinda Elliott has been nominated for her programme design for Little Shop of Horrors, which wrapped last month.
Beau Ladlow and Milly Henley received a nomination for their design of the four Audrey II puppets used in Little Shop of Horrors.
Council president Simon Dandy said the nominations reflected the hard work put in by the whole council.
“We we’re clear that this doesn’t drive us, we don’t seek out for recognition, but it probably does show that we are doing things that do meet the standards of our peers which includes metropolitan Melbourne,” he said.
“There is a big discrepancy there between what’s available – people and monetary resources – so I think we should be really proud.
“Those who are nominated would be the first to say that the nominations are reflective of a real team effort. No matter what happens, just the fact that we have received the recognition is wonderful.”
He said the community should be proud of the high calibre of talent in the Wimmera.
“We’re proud that we can provide pretty high quality theatre locally,” he said.
Mr Dandy said the council had received nominations for every show it had staged since 2008’s production of Cats. Last year the council received an incredible 12 nominations for its production of Rent.
The council’s next show, Rock of Ages, will be staged in May. Preparations have already started with the first auditions held at the weekend.
“We had more than 70 people which included a lot of new people to the council. Some existing people have also come back,” he said.
“(Director) Erin Boutcher and the team are doing a great job and have been very encouraging of everyone. It’s going to be something a bit different to anything we’ve done before.”
Winners for the Music Theatre Guild of Victoria awards will be announced at a ceremony on December 8.
