The project has been listed in Horsham Rural City Council’s 2018-19 Budget.
McKenzie Creek’s Neville McIntyre questioned the council on its reason to replace the floorboards at a council meeting on Monday night.
See page 88:
The council’s community wellbeing director Kevin O’Brien said the heritage floor was approaching the end of its useful life.
“There can be no further sanding on the flooring because this will cause the floorboards to split,” he said. “Also, there is a section of the floor that is uneven, which impacts on venue operations.”
A major refurbishment project at the Horsham Town Hall did not include the replacement of the performing arts centre floor in the existing town hall.
Mr O’Brien said the council has applied for a Living Heritage’s community grants program to finance the project. If successful, he said the council would then need to acquire a permit before the works moved forward.
Mr O’Brien said the council was obliged to maintain and repair the floors “to the end of its useful life”. He said the site has “architectural and heritage importance” and they would meet the full heritage requirements.
NOTE: An earlier version of this story contained errors. The story stated the floor could not take any more standing. It should have read that the floor could not take any more sanding. Mr O’Brien said the council was obliged to maintain the floor “to the end of its useful life” and the site had heritage importance.
