Horsham Lawn defeated Drung South by two sets and Kalkee defeated Haven by the same margin, as the close season continues.
Horsham Lawn were guided by Cherie and Graeme Wood, who both won three sets each against Drung South.
The match started in Lawn’s favor, winning three of the first four doubles sets as their opposition struggled to acclimatise to the grass surface.
But Drung South hit back. They split the singles ties 2-2 and won the next three doubles ties to take a one set lead at 5-6. Horsham Lawn, however, were too strong in the final three doubles, winning all three matches and taking a 8-89 to 6-72 victory.
Star player Graeme Wood said he was pleased with the win against tough opposition.
“Definitely happy, it was a really good win,” he said. “Last time we played them they beat us on games, and this time we only just beat them so we’re pretty even two teams.
“The grass might have been a bit of a factor, but I think they got used to it pretty quickly.
“It seems like a pretty close season which is great. It’s really good that way.”
The Horsham Lawn women won their sets 5-2, and Wood said that was a key part to their victory.
“The ladies did really well,” he said. “Bridie Freehan and Cherie (wood) were really good. It was mainly them that did well and got us the win.”
Both teams were near full strength, with Jae McGrath out for Horsham Lawn while Ben Argent was missing for Drung South.
The win solidified Horsham Lawn’s position at second place on the ladder, while Drung South fell out of the top four and into fifth after KALKEE defeated HAVEN.
Kalkee secured the two set victory at home 8-95 to 6-62 to leapfrog both Haven and Drung South into third place.
Kalkee’s men proved too strong in the contest, with both Steve Schultz and Jeff Dufty winning all three of their sets.
The women’s line for Haven fought their hardest, with Genevieve Bush winning all three of her sets, but it was not quite enough. Haven are in fourth spot after the loss, sitting just above Drung South on percentage.
In the final match, ST MICHAEL’S flexed their muscle against TELANGATUK EAST with a 12-104 to 2-56 win.
Kate Rogers was the shining light for Telangatuk East as she won two of her doubles ties with Courtney Price and Karen Rees. Peter Hayes was dominant for St Michael’s winning his singles 6-0 against Peter Rogers.
