The group has been active in the region for nearly 30 years, seeking funding and support from a range of sources as it aimed to improve driver attitude and behavior across the region.
The group said the road safety education now available to Wimmera motorists in a range of forms led to the decision to cease operating on December 31.
The announcement coincides with the organisation’s executive officer David Rule announcing his retirement from the role.
On Monday night, committee member Rhonda Armour presented Mr Rule with a plaque to commemorate 12 years at the helm.
“During the 1990s the group was instrumental in having trials of ‘rumble strips’ conducted to increase lane departure alertness on the Western Highway near Dimboola and Green Lake,” Mr Rule said.
“The trials were a success and they are now widely used.
“In recent years the group has been involved with fatigue awareness, distraction, responsible alcohol use and implementation of the Fit2Drive program in Wimmera secondary colleges.
“Road safety applies to all road users and the group has conducted programs ranging from heavy industry operators to motorized mobility device users and pedestrians.”
TAC data shows there have been 2 fatalities on Horsham Rural City roads in 2018, compared to nine in 1990.
