The Tigers 2018 coach Nathan Sachse has stepped down and will not remain at the club next season.
Jakobi has played his entire career at Pimpinio and became an assistant coach last season. Jakobi said he was excited to take on a leadership position.
“Coaching is something that I’ve probably always wanted to do in my career,” he said. “The opportunity sort of just came up so I thought I might as well grab it with both hands. I’m feeling good about next year and I’m quite excited about the opportunity.”
The senior football team is in need of a sharp turnaround after winning only one game across the last two seasons. Jakobi said he was hopeful the club would improve considerably next season.
“We’re trying to improve there’s no doubt about that,” he said. “That can come with getting a few more players into the team and also just getting the best out of the blokes that we’ve got – it’s about getting everyone committed and ready to go.”
The clubs under-17s team had far more success last season, winning their way into the grand final and losing by just five points to Noradjuha-Quantong.
Jakobi said he was excited by the young players coming through the club and stepping into the seniors.
“We’ve got a fair few juniors coming through this year,” Jakobi said. “They’ve had a couple of really good seasons in the 17s and I’m excited about what they will bring.
“That’s one thing that I’m excited about is developing those juniors. I’ve known a lot of the boys from the very start. It’s going to be good to work closely with a lot of them.”
Jakobi said the club had made a couple of low-key signings that would also help the side improve..
“We’ve got a few players that have come across, no big signings that are worth talking too much about but they will add a some really good depth,” he said.
In their desire to improve, the club has been putting in the effort with a big pre-season and some decent numbers in attendance.
“We’ve been going for about 5-6 weeks before Christmas,” he said. “Numbers have been really good, we’ve had nearly 30 different blokes come through. It hasn’t been compulsory or anything like that so it’s good to see those numbers.
“It’s pretty exciting times.”
With Jakobi signing on, every club in the Horsham District league now has a senior football coach for the upcoming season.
Jakobi, Brandon Weatherson at Taylors Lake and Daniel Batson at Jeparit-Rainbow are the only new coaches, with every other side re-signing their head coach from last season.
