Country Fire Authority district 17 operations officer Lindsay Barry said an unused farm house had caught fire from a nearby haystack fire.
The fire started at 5.05pm on Tonkins Road at Kalkee.
Mr Barry said eight vehicles responded to the scene and stopped the forward spread of the fire.
“There will be smoke around the area, which is conducive with haystack fires,” he said.
Mr Barry said crews will remain at the scene, but expects no further issues with a cool change in temperature.
The fire has come on a state-wide Total Fire Ban day. The Wimmera and Mallee regions braced itself for a scorcher as temperatures were set to soar to the mid-40s.
The Bureau of Meterology forecast a cool change this afternoon, but strong winds in the evening.
