Players from Sunraysia, Bendigo, Ballarat, Warrnambool, Horsham, Murtoa, Geelong and former regional athletes now based in Melbourne, are expected to attend trials for both men’s and women’s teams.
At the first trial held a fortnight ago in Bendigo, 54 boys and 36 girls participated in the hope of making a list to play in the State League 2019 season. After the first trial, division two and three coaches were able to reach a consensus to create another men’s division two team given how strong the numbers were.
“We had in the back of our minds that numbers were going to pick up, especially in the men’s teams, but coaches were blown away by just how many there were,” said Phantoms president Bendigo’s Paul Byrne.
The trial process has evolved enormously over the past three years as the club cements it’s standing in the State League competition, and success has come its way.
“It’s true that success breeds success, and Phantoms have proven to be a very successful club which is evident by the growth in the number of teams over that time,” said Volleyball Horsham president David Berry.
“The club gives opportunities to players of all abilities being represented in the Premier divisions as well as reserves, division two and three,” Berry added.
What the club has found over this growth period are the connections built with Vic West state team coaches translates into increased interest in the club.
“Players make friends within their state teams and build relationships with coaches, which in turn helps spark the interest in our club,” Berry said.
More players are expected to attend the Horsham trial, which will enable the club to determine the final make-up of their teams for the 2019 season.
The trials begin at 11am with the men at the basketball stadium and the women at St Brigid’s College.
“We’ll fill both courts at both venues which is great but it would have been nice to have them all under the one roof but we know that isn’t a possibility in Horsham unfortunately.”
