The Roos' opening-round 21-point win against Nhill was their first in the Wimmera league since August 2017 and only their third win in the past three years.
Col Campbell lived through the tough times as president and savoured the win.
"It was huge for us. I suppose being president for the last three years and only having two wins and not looking like getting one last year; it's really big," he said.
"I sent the co-coaches a message on Sunday congratulating them, and one of them made a really good comment.
"He said we've got the win now, so we're not chasing anything and no one's saying Dimboola isn't going to win anything. To get that win on the board early is really important going forward."
Campbell stepped down as president before the start of the season and is now serving in a secretary's role. He said his tenure was tough at times.
"It's always hard when you're not winning, and you try to keep enjoying things," he said. "It's pretty tough to keep bouncing back.
"For the blokes who stuck through it's a great return and a real credit to their attitude. They haven't gone chasing wins. They've stuck by us."
Campbell said the win was felt beyond the football field.
"It's great for the whole town, because we're by far and above the biggest club in town and it's hard to have been so ordinary. We've still maintained a great club, but we just haven't been successful," he said.
"Now you get a coffee and people congratulate you.
"They joke and say see what happens when you change president. I told a few people where to go, but it's all good fun of course."
