The Lakers claimed the four points on June 17 2017, when they overcame a 14 point deficit at three quarter time to upset fellow struggling side Pimpinio.

Jye Smith was the Lakers playing coach for that monumental win, and has since stuck around at the club through a difficult era.

Smith coached last season as the Lakers lost all 16 matches by an average of 133 points.

But the atmosphere at Taylors Lake in 2019 is different, with a new coach, a dozen new recruits and a renewed sense of optimism.

On Saturday, 678 days after their last win, the Lakers seem a chance to once again taste victory when they take on Laharum.

"I can tell you, everyone in the group that has been around the last few years are so hungry for a win," Smith said.

"You know that's going to be our fuel for the game for a lot of blokes.

"But obviously we're not getting ahead of ourselves. We've got to go out there and fight for it."

Smith's time at Taylors Lake has been vastly different to what he was used to in his junior playing days. Smith said he became accustomed to success during his early football career with Horsham.

But he has since learned to love challenge of being at a club on the rebuild.

"During my juniors at Horsham, I think I went three years without losing. Then in the seniors we were winning flags and weren't losing a game," Smith said. "I've been a part of that success, but that's part of the reason I came to Taylors Lake, it was for the challenge.

"Sometimes if you walk into a successful side you don't know how good it can feel to have a win, or to make a final. You can take it for granted."

After living through the tough times, Smith said there was now a bright future at the Lakers. He said no matter the result on Saturday, the club was now in a position to succeed.

"If we win, it would be exciting for the club, but it's only one game," Smith said.

"We've now got a great bunch of juniors coming through and the club is growing... it doesn't stop this year or this week.

"We've created a great culture now, and people are seeing that Taylors Lake have turned the page."

In other round three contests, Kalkee travel to take on Edenhope Apsley, and Jeparit-Rainbow host Noradjuha-Quantong, in two matches between evenly placed teams.

Rupanyup face a daunting task against Harrow-Balmoral at home, while Pimpinio travel take on Swifts.
