However the departure of several key players in the off-season left the Giants on the back foot.
Some handy recruiting, including the arrival of Blake Marshall, has the side confident of bettering last season's tough grand final loss.
Marshall said he had loved his first months at his new club.
"I'm actually really enjoying it out here playing footy. It's been pretty good," he said.
"I'm fitting in pretty well; it's a good bunch of boys out there, so it's going well."
Marshall arrived from Modbury, in the Adelaide Footy League, and said he didn't know what to expect in the Wimmera league.
"I didn't know much at all about out here, I didn't know anyone who's come out here and played footy. I have a couple mates who played in country South Australia, and that was about all I knew," he said.
"I didn't have many expectations at all. I kind of thought it would just be classic country footy, but it's been really good."
The versatile recruit said while the club placed no demands on him, it was still daunting entering a new league.
"There's always a little bit of pressure, I guess. No one really knew much about my own footy, and I didn't know a lot about the footy out here, so it was more of that internal pressure if anything," he said.
"But, it was nothing that kind of took over too much.
"The league I played in at Adelaide was actually pretty similar. I guess out here you don't know anybody and I don't really have any expectations of any team, so it takes a bit of the pressure off."
The Giants have had a stuttering start to the season, but sit firmly in the top four on the ladder.
Marshall said it was good to find form, as he fills roles across the ground.
"It hasn't been too bad. Obviously, the first couple of games were just getting used to playing for another team and meeting all the boys, so it always makes it a bit harder," he said. "But, now I know everyone it makes everything a bit easier, and I'm definitely enjoying it, which also helps.
"I've been playing a bit all over the board. The first game was in the half-back line, but now I've played a bit on the wing and also rotation in half-forward and midfield as well.
"But, I don't mind mixing it up."
The new Giant said he had no regrets about making the move to the Wimmera Football League.
"It's definitely been good getting out to the Giants. The whole team and the whole club have been very welcoming and accommodating."
