Officers say a 27-year-old Minyip man was arrested and released pending further investigation, after an on-field incident during a reserves match between Minyip-Murtoa and the Horsham Demons.
The incident left a 22-year-old Horsham man in hospital with his jaw broken on both sides of his face.
The 2019 AFL Victoria Country handbook stipulates making unreasonable or unnecessary contact to the face of an opponent carries a minimum one match ban.
Monday: Investigations are ongoing into an on-field incident during a football game at Murtoa from the weekend.
Police believe a 22-year-old Horsham man was injured on field during a football reserves match at about 2pm on Saturday.
A 27-year-old Minyip man was arrested and interviewed by police on Sunday and released pending further inquiries.
The Horsham man was taken to hospital.
Detective Gjalt Erkelens, who is investigating the incident, said the man's jaw was broken in two places on either side of his face.
"He has undergone surgery which was quite extensive," he said.
"There will be quite a bit of recovery time before he is able to use his jaw again."
Detective Erkelens said any witnesses or anyone with footage could contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit report at crimestoppersvic.com.au.
AFL Wimmera-Mallee general manager Steve McQueen said an umpire at the match reported the incident to the tribunal, and he could not comment further.
"Generally this is not a common thing," he said. "The date of the tribunal hearing is unknown at this stage, normally it happens on Wednesdays but it comes down to availability."
Horsham Demons president Geoff Lord and Wimmera Football League chief commissioner Trevor Albrecht said they were aware of the incident, but declined to comment given the matter was before the tribunal.
