A West Wimmera Shire Council spokeswoman said the culprit or culprits drilled several holes in the base of the ash trees' trunks "where it is presumed that poison was applied".
She said the trees vandalised were located on Dungey Street.
"There will be considerable cost in having the dead trees and stumps removed and then replaced with two new trees," she said.
"It is an offence to remove, lop or destroy a street tree without the prior consent of council."
The spokesperson said Kaniva police officers were investigating.
Senior constable Adrian Hoggett said while the incident was reported late last week, it happened in December.
"We are still looking for witnesses, but at this stage there are no leads to suggest this is linked to any other incidents of vandalism in town," he said.
Senior constable Hoggett said anyone with information should call Kaniva Police on 5392 2244.
