Ricky Taylor, 46, appeared at Horsham Magistrates' Court on Tuesday and faced five charges, including contravening a family violence intervention order and other family violence related offences.
The court heard that a limited family violence intervention order was put in place between Taylor and the female victim on October 31, 2018.
The court heard that on April 16 the victim drove the accused to Ballarat for an appointment, which contravened the order. It also heard that later that night Taylor and the accused had been drinking alcohol together.
The victim took $1400 out of Taylor's bank account to stop him buying alcohol. The court heard Taylor became angry, grabbed the victim and pushed her head against a wall. He also hit her with an open hand several times.
Taylor then picked up the victim by her hair and pushed down on her neck with his arm so she couldn't breathe.
The court heard the victim received eye, cheek and nose injuries, and was taken to Warracknabeal hospital.
Taylor was arrested by police at a campsite he had set up by the Wimmera River in Warracknabeal. He was taken to Warracknabeal Police Station and interviewed.
Taylor told police he didn't recall the incident and "felt sick to (his) stomach" when told about the incident. He also told police he was alcohol affected at the time.
The court heard that on April 23 a full no contact order was put in place. It also heard Taylor was bailed on April 26 to appear at Horsham Magistrates' Court on June 26.
On June 1 the victim received 19 phone calls from an unknown number over the course of three hours. The victim answered one of the calls and recognised the voice belonging to Taylor.
The victim recorded some of the phone calls. The court heard that Taylor was "abusive" during the phone calls. It also heard that Taylor had sent multiple texts to the victim.
Taylor was arrested on June 5 and was remanded into custody.
Taylor's defence lawyer Nick Graham said his client admitted he had a drinking problem, but said the victim did too.
Mr Graham described the relationship between Taylor and the victim as "tumultuous" and alleged it was physically violent from both sides.
Magistrate Franz Hozler told Mr Graham that "none of these things excused (Taylor's) behaviour".
"If there is proven counts of contravening an order, then there are consequences," he said.
Mr Hozler sentenced Taylor to an accumulative 45 days in jail, with 12 days already served. He said Taylor would be placed on a good behaviour bond when released and would receive a conviction.
