Kevin Johnson, 36, appeared at Horsham Magistrates' Court on June 27 where he pleaded guilty to one charge of assault.
The court heard Johnson was involved in a fight with another man on November 12.
Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kass Myers told the court the victim was sitting in his car in front of the Warracknabeal IGA when the incident occurred.
She said the victim saw Johnson yelling at his dog and yanking on its collar.
The victim told Johnson to "ease up on the dog", which sparked an altercation.
Johnson threw punches at the victim through the car window and the victim punched Johnson back.
The pair then wrestled and fell out of the vehicle. The fight was broken up by witnesses.
Johnson was later located by police with blood on his face.
Defence lawyer Nick Graham said Johnson was remorseful for his actions.
"He knows now that the biggest mistake he made was to respond," he said.
Magistrate Peter Dunn ordered Johnson to pay a $1000 fine, plus court costs.
