Goroke Leading Senior Constable Jim Richardson said the incident occurred late last week, but was only discovered at the weekend.
"A few bottle of wine were taken. There was also water damage from the offender or offenders taking a hose into the church. It was very disappointing for the church volunteers who had to clean it up," he said.
He said people with information could contact Edenhope Police Station on 5585 1003, Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the Police Advice Hotline on 131 444.
Leading Senior Constable Richardson also encouraged people to report crimes in a timely manner.
"People need to report all crimes to police. If they do discover a crime, they need to leave everything as is and contact the police as soon as possible," he said.
