The Country Fire Authority team was called to reports of "a smell of smoke coming from an air conditioning unit" at 1pm.
Head of campus associate professor Geoff Lord said the building evacuated, Building A , contained electrical trades workshops, office space and the Wimmera Southern Mallee LLEN.
CFA operations officer Lindsay Barry said five people were evacuated overall.
"At this stage they have found nothing and they're going to get an electrician to look over the unit as a precautionary measure," he said.
