Local Government Association Queensland boss Greg Hallam urged the prime minister and Queensland premier on Tuesday to work together on water security after eight additional areas in the state were drought declared.

Mr Hallam said the drought should be at the top of the agenda for both federal and state governments and urged Scott Morrison and Annastacia Palaszczuk to consider their drought and water security strategies.

He said an overhaul of the state's water pressure levels and water grid could save as much as 60 million megalitres of water a day.

The introduction of reverse osmosis plants would also help the state's water supply.

Introducing both methods could cost up to $500 million over the next five years but Mr Hallam said the federal and state governments needed to step up.

"We have seen these very significant changes in climate, we're not getting into blame games, we need medium- to long-term solutions," Mr Hallam said.

"We cannot have towns without water; are we really going to abandon those communities in the future because of climate change?"

Federal Drought Minister David Littleproud met his state counterparts in the northern NSW town of Moree on Tuesday where a new drought co-ordinator position was agreed.

"We have a responsibility to ensure drought assistance is complementary at the different levels of government, and not working against other assistance measures," Mr Littleproud said.
