I have been fixated lately, as many of us have with the bushfire emergency that engulfs our nation. It is hard to avoid with the evidence (smoke) all around us and the ongoing media reports.

One thing I have paid close attention to is the Spirit of Australians that do not give up and their commitment to rebuild.
I've heard stories of people staying to defend their homes, because maybe, just maybe, they can save it.
I even saw a video of a mum and daughter smiling and laughing as they drove away from their home which had been destroyed.
What is it that gives people this attitude, that they can smile in the midst of disaster? I think, it is HOPE.
There seems to be an underlying current that despite all that happens to us and around us, there is still hope.
Even though the nation may be on fire, more and more people turn to prayer for rain. There is a hope that someone is listening.
Hebrews 6:19 says "We have this certain hope like a strong, unbreakable anchor holding our souls to God himself. Our anchor of hope is fastened to the mercy seat..." Maybe one of the most important things we can remind ourselves of during times like this (when everything seems against us) is that there is always hope.
And that our hope is not tied to something that moves and shakes with the wind and weather, but rather it is an unbreakable anchor, tied to an immovable foundation.
I take comfort in this scripture. It says that even though I sometimes drift, and my emotions, moods and life experiences can be extreme, there is always something solid to which I can be grounded. That is God Himself.
