Accent Group, which owns Athlete's Foot, Hype and Platypus, is closing 522 stores across Australia from 5pm today for the next four weeks.
However, Mr Atherton said he was allowed to continue trading.
"Accent group gave franchisees the option of remaining open," he said.
"I've also had some long conversations about trying to get my rent down in the short term, reduce my loan repayments with the bank, and reducing my upcoming orders with distributors.
"My distributors have been extremely supportive this whole time."
The store owner said while the business will continue to trade during the COVID-19 pandemic, he will be the only staff member to serve customers.
"I have let my staff go, only because there wouldn't be any work for them (due to a reduced number of customers), not because of the costs.
"Last week I informed all of my staff about the possible changes and said I would be upfront with them at all times.
"On Wednesday I let all of them go and now I will run the store myself."
The vice-chair of Business Horsham added all businesses should be prepared for a rapid government shutdown.
"Have a chat with your accountant and get a plan in place in case your business is shut down.
"There is a plethora of information available at the moment and we (Business Horsham) have made sure it filters down.
"Lately we've had a bit of a push back because it has been information overload.
"At the end of the day, we are a facilitator for businesses, so we offer help where we can."
