Wimmera discusses what a shortened season could look like amid coronavirus pandemic

Football and netball has been postponed until May 31, with June 6 penciled in as a potential start date for a delayed season.

A June 6 start would give the Horsham District league 11 weeks before the finals were scheduled to begin, while the Wimmera Football League would have 12 weeks for a regular season.

Wimmera Football League commissioner Trevor Albrecht said there were preliminary discussions around how best to proceed when football returns.

"It is all just wait and see at the moment - it could be anything," Mr Albrecht said.

"With the June 6 start, we could have half a season.

"If we had to push back another month from there, I think we could still have everyone play each other once.

"Anything later than that and we could certainly play, but whether it works as a seasonal fixture, I don't know."

Mr Albrecht said the league would explore the possibility of playing later into the year if necessary.

"We would have to speak to other sports as well, but I think timing wise in the year, we could go until the end of October," he said.

"We would need to have a discussion with cricket and tennis associations - there would be too many overlapping players.

"But we could have those discussions if it came to that."

Horsham District Football Netball League chairman Fred Mellington said the situation was evolving too rapidly to speculate.

"It is just simply a waiting game at the moment," he said. "Nobody knows what is going to come from this.

"We are just trying to stay as positive as we can and keep clubs as informed as we can as information is forthcoming."

Mr Mellington said the prosperity of football-netball clubs was the top priority of the league.

"My main focus is to maintain our 11 clubs, and having an organisation in place that can hit the ground running whenever we are allowed to get back to playing," he said.
