Tom McDonald still a chance to play after eye injury

The Melbourne forward sat out most of his side's win against Gold Coast on Saturday after copping a stray finger to the eye late in the first quarter.

The club said McDonald was taken to hospital as a precaution and was on track to return to training later this week.

"He went off to hospital to get checked, fortunately there's no long term damage for him, so he'll have a pretty light week and we'll see how he goes for the game against the Hawks," Melbourne performance manager Darren Burgess said.

Younger brother Oscar McDonald was a surprise inclusion for the Demons, but impressed in his first match since the season-opener in March.

The 24-year-old racked up nine disposals and laid four tackles, as he made his case for a permanent position in the Dees' backline.

Melbourne has been based in Manly since the AFL evacuated all Victorian clubs as a lockdown loomed.
