THE proposed junior football and netball competition in the Wimmera has been cancelled.
AFL Wimmera-Mallee announced the decision on Thursday afternoon, confirming that an active case of COVID-19 was connected to a competing club.
There are currently four active coronavirus cases in the Horsham council region.
AFLWM area manager Jason Muldoon said that the protocols utilised by clubs had worked to limit the spread of the virus.
He said that the Department of Health and Human Services were utilising training logs to trace potential cases.
Mr Muldoon said cancelling the season was the right option for the health and safety of the community.
"Please understand that this is not an easy decision, as we look to balance the importance of our young players being active and the safety of everyone in the football community and the wider regional community," Mr Muldoon said.
"It has become apparent that to forge ahead with the proposed structure would be putting the players, parents, administrators, volunteers and spectators at risk of catching and transmitting the coronavirus within the region."
Mr Muldoon also thanked clubs for their patience and diligence in pursuing a season.
"Stay safe, and let's look after each other by adhering to the state government requirements," he said.
