* Australians are on track to start receiving coronavirus vaccinations from late next month after the medicines regulator provisionally approved the Pfizer jab.

* The Therapeutic Goods Administration has ticked off on the vaccine for people aged 16 and over after it met strict standards around safety, quality and efficacy.

* While the program is now slated to start in late February instead of the middle of the month, the federal government has conceded shipping or production issues could delay it to early March.

* Australia's late-March target to vaccinate four million people has been pushed back to early April because of global supply chain issues.

* Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese said the government should expand its vaccine portfolio to the world's best standard of five to six different types.

* Australia has put a stop to the New Zealand travel bubble for 72 hours after a South African variant of COVID-19 was detected in a woman after 14 days of isolation.

* It came one year to the day after the first coronavirus infection was recorded in Australia, which has since had more than 28,700 cases and 909 deaths.

* In stark contrast, there have been 25 million cases in the US alone and more than 400,000 deaths.

* There were no new cases of local transmission in Australia on Monday.

* NSW recorded an eighth straight day without a new local COVID-19 case as health alerts were issued for recent travellers from New Zealand.

* The state recorded zero locally-acquired COVID-19 cases in the 24 hours to 8pm on Sunday and three cases among travellers in hotel quarantine.

* Victoria reported six coronavirus cases in hotel quarantine as the state's stretch of no local infections reached 19 days.

* Health authorities confirmed that none of the new quarantine infections are connected to the Australian Open.

* Two cases were reported in Queensland's hotel quarantine system, while South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory all had none.

* There were 11 new virus cases recorded in Australia on Monday: six in Victoria, three in NSW and two in Queensland. All were diagnosed in hotel quarantine.

* The national death toll is 909: Victoria 820, NSW 56, Tasmania 13, WA 9, Queensland 6, SA 4, ACT 3. (Two Queensland residents who died in NSW have been included in the official tolls of both states).
