Yarriambiack Shire Council have announced that the Warracknabeal Landfill will be decommissioned and will be converted to a transfer station.
Decommissioning of Warracknabeal Landfill was one of the key priorities in the 2017 - 2021 Council Plan.
Yarriambiack Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Ms Jessie Holmes explained the Warracknabeal Landfill was a difficult spot and unlicensed.
"Having a landfill with no weighbridge creates difficulties in reporting and accounting for waste. Waste reporting is needed to measure the progress in the ongoing process to align our activities with the Victorian Government's Circular Economy Policy," she said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"The Warracknabeal Landfill was unlicensed due to its small size. Under the new waste laws commencing July, 1, council would be required to obtain permits through the EPA to keep it operational.
"If we were to retain the landfill it is likely to increase the administration burden due to stringent monitoring and reporting requirements. The transfer station concept assists both Council and residents in their attempts to be more conscious about their waste."
S&R Engineering of Bendigo has been awarded the contract to undertake the rehabilitation works which are scheduled to commence on the June 15.
Works are expected to be completed by the end of June, weather permitting. The project is expected to cost $150,000 and will greatly improve the waste management process at Warracknabeal.

Hard waste rubbish will now be unloaded into the concrete centre bay of the hard waste shed. Most materials will then be transferred on to other destinations.
"We ask residents that utilise our transfer stations to sort your load as you fill your trailer so that when you are onsite, you can deliver your materials directly to the designated area. This is an exciting update for our community and our ongoing commitment to improving our waste management and contributing to a robust and thriving environment", Ms Holmes said.
Residents with enquires regarding the Warracknabeal Transfer Station can contact the Yarriambiack Shire Council main office on 5398 0100.
