In a nod to the region's cricketing strength, three Wimmera players have been selected in the Western Waves under 15 female side.
Adelle Weidemann, Ava Clark and Lilly Reading all impressed selectors enough at trials and previous tournaments to earn their place in the side.
The girls all ply their trade in the Wimmera Girls Cricket League. Weidemann plays for the Horsham Hurricanes, Clark the Wimmera Roos and Reading the Stawell Strikers.
The team is set to play in the Youth Premier League in Melbourne in January and acts as a major stepping stone in the pathway to higher honours.
Western Waves Under 15s coach Grace Lee was full of praise for the trio and their versatile skillsets.
"They're probably all allrounders," Lee said.
"Lilly also spent some time wicketkeeping and did a really good job.
"They've all got real excitement in the field as well, bowl well and can rotate the strike.
"Adelle especially probably has that power hitting ability on top of that."
Unfortunately because of border issues limiting the full side's ability to meet, the team hasn't been able to get together for a training run yet.
Lee is hopeful that will be resolved soon and is aiming for the side to have a couple of sessions before January.
If players perform well at the carnival they have the opportunity to get selected for Victorian teams.
While it would be great news for the region if the girls were to get selected in those sides, the Wimmera Girls Cricket League is set to reap the benefits just from them competing in the YPL.
"What I've noticed in the last few years is that the girls in those YPL sides go back to their associations and it lifts the whole level," Lee said.
This year Lee was impressed by the plethora of talent she had to choose from for this year's side, which she thinks will be "quite competitive in the YPL.
"There were five or six who missed out (on Waves selection) who were unlucky.
"This is probably the hardest year to pick because the average level has improved so much and there were so many around of similar ability but you can only pick 13.
"There were definitely some tough selections but it's great for the region, difficult for the coach."
"I like to think that we'll push again for top or close to the top of our pool. But it's very hard to know with missing that year last year what the other teams will shape up like."
