HORSHAM and surrounding communities can shape the way they would commemorate the 2009 Victorian bushfires next year.
The state government announced $4.4 million to support the 10-year anniversary activities in communities affected by the 2009 Victorian bushfires. The Horsham and surrounding communities among the towns affected.
Haven’s Sue Exell said she hoped the community would mark the 10-year anniversary of the bushfire with a commemorative event. She said an event could celebrate the efforts to rebuild the community into what it has become today.
Mrs Exell has led commemorative events in the past, which included a 12-month anniversary commemorative day.
“It turned out the 12-month anniversary coincided with Haven turning 100 years-old,” she said.
“We combined the two and made a big weekend that celebrated the opening of the new school and we had an art show and a market.
“There was also a bus trip looking at where the fires had been."
Mrs Exell said the Haven community was rebuilt during the past 10 years and she hoped to revisit the areas affected by the fire.
“I hope to do another bus trip because a lot of homes were rebuilt and we have new playgrounds. There has been a lot of work done and it would be a good opportunity to showcase that,” she said.
Mrs Exell said she would form a committee to apply for the state funding.
